Lucques Pork Burger

These burgers are AMAZING!  Especially if you mix the pork and let the flavors sink in over night.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2  pounds  ground pork
  • 4  ounces  firm chorizo or hot Italian sausage, casing removed and crumbled
  • 2  slices (2 oz. total) bacon, finely chopped
  • 1/4  cup  olive oil
  • 1/4  cup  minced shallots
  • 2  tablespoons  chopped parsley
  • 2  teaspoons  fresh thyme leaves
  • 1  teaspoon  ground cumin
  • 4  hamburger buns, toasted
Serve with:  Chipotle Aioli.  For an easy version, blend one or two canned chipotle chiles into a cup of mayonnaise

Preparation

1. In a large bowl, mix ground pork, chorizo, bacon, olive oil, shallots, parsley, thyme, and cumin. Form mixture into four equal patties about 3/4 inch thick.
2. Lay burgers on a barbecue grill over a bed of medium-hot coals or medium-high heat on a gas grill (you can hold your hand at grill level only 3 to 4 seconds); close lid on gas grill. Cook burgers, turning once, just until no longer pink in the middle (except for pieces of chorizo; cut to test), 13 to 15 minutes total; keep a spray bottle of water handy to douse any flames. Set burgers on buns.

GQ's Burger Of The Year: LA's Umami Burger

I must go to LA to try one of these
GQ.com

Fleischman, the founder of the modest but ever expanding four-shop Umami Burger chain, has rethought every element of the hamburger experience. The bun. The meat. The ketchup. The toppings. Even valet parking. Yes, at the original Umami Burger joint on La Brea, 900 square feet of utter simplicity across the road from a Goodwill store, every burger comes with parking, the ultimate in West Coast customer service.
Elsewhere in L.A., the burger world is in disarray. So desperate is the situation, so uncertain are the natives, that at least one establishment specializing in burgers is flying in chopped meat from the LaFrieda purveyors in Manhattan. The old L.A. order--In-N-Out Burger, Fatburger, Bob's Big Boy, Tommy's--is in retreat.

The Burger Garage - Long Island NY

This LIC counter joint pays homage to roadside dining with improved fast-food burgers, meticulously built with plump Black Angus patties, fresh toppings and a decadently buttered Martin’s potato roll to replace the usual flimsy bun. In a borough where the LaFrieda takeover has yet to reach critical mass, the star-butcher blend here—a four-ounce mix of chuck, brisket and short rib—is a legitimate draw. But it’s the classic preparation (flattop-griddled, draped in junky yellow American cheese) that takes the sandwich to the finish line. No wonder Hamburger America filmmaker George Motz has given Burger Garage the nod as one of his favorite NYC newcomers. 25-36 Jackson Ave at 44th Dr, Long Island City, Queens (718-392-0424). $4.20 and up.

OMG! The 5 Napkin Burger!

I'm in love....
I can barely speak.... because I'm drooling over this burger!
I must have it now!!

The name says it all. 10 oz fresh ground chuck, gruyere cheese, caramelized onions and rosemary aioli on a soft white roll. Way too juicy for one napkin. Or four.

It's Beef O'Clock!

Choptank: The Ultimate Choptank
Created as the "ultimate hangover cure", Chop's taking their aged Wisc cheddar/pickled pepper mayo/bacon jam burger and topping it off w/ a fried egg plus a massive hunk of scrapple, a loaf of blended porcine offal thought to have been invented by the Pennsylvania Dutch (likely to bolster the strength of their ovens).

Holiday Snack Bar - Long Beach Island, NJ

The Holiday Snack Bar in Long Beach Island, NJ is one of my most favorite burgers places.  The burgers are tasty, the menu is simple and the service is quick!  Everyone sits in a three quarter circle type food counter with the desserts on display in the middle - and the desserts are amazing!  The Holiday Snack Bar has been in existence for 62 years.

My usual order is a double with cheese, lettuce and tomato on the side and fries.  My boyfriend orders two singles and sneaks my fries.

The Smash Burger

The Smash Burger is called "the burger with a soul". I haven't had the opportunity to try one yet (they are based out of Denver) but I like the concept, very simple menu and they "smash" the burger when cooking to sear in the flavor. I've always been told not to smash the burger because you'll lose the juicy flavor but they seem to have something here!

The Smashburger Story

Not long ago, people ate lots of ordinary burgers. These burgers were perfectly acceptable. They were inexpensive, satisfied the appetite, and tasted much better than many of the other foods that people were eating. Plenty of burger places were opened and they served billions and billions.

But there was something missing - the need for something satisfying and real, something basic and good, something affordable and fresh - a place with a burger soul. A place that burger lovers could call their own and feel pride in recommending to their friends. So we asked ourselves, shouldn't there be a better way? Full Story

Sonic Burger - American Classic Drive-In

Recently my 17 year old daughter enlightened me on the Sonic Burger, a new spin on an old American Classic - the drive-in burger joint. Sonic Burger is truly a fun experience, the wait staff is on roller skates, the menu is simple and they serve tater tots! The burgers are big which was a very nice surprise and for dessert, hot fudge cake and slushes. A new Sonic Burger opened up in Wayne, NJ on Route 46, it was such a grand opening they were directing traffic and hired a police officer just in case the crowd grew too big.

Tommy's Burgers - CA and NV

Many moons ago when I lived in Pasadena, CA - it was 2AM and a couple of friends and I were craving a juicy burger. I had never indulged in the CA icon Tommy's Burgers until then - I will never forget that night, good friends, laughs and a big, messy, tasty chiliburger at 2AM.

Here's some Tommy history:

Tommy’s World Famous Hamburgers are definitely one of the best you can find in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Founded in 1946 by Tommy Koulax on the corner of Beverly and Rampart, the burger chain has taken other fast-food competitors in stride and expanded to include several locations all over the Los Angeles area, including the Orange, Riverside, and San Bernadino Counties, as well as all over southern California and into Nevada. An LA icon, the burger chain has been rated the best in Orange County and expects to retain the title for years to come. The natives and tourists of southern California all seem to agree that it is easily the best burger in town and possibly the best in Southern California, while some enthusiasts are ready to crown it the best in the world.
Made with basic, but quality ingredients, all Tommy’s burgers’ 100 percent beef patties are topped with ripe beefsteak tomatoes, freshly chopped onions, thick slices of real cheddar cheese, pickles, mustard, and of course a heavy dose of their famous chili. With each burger made to order, they come out fresh and piping hot. In addition to their popular burgers, the chain also offers custom made hot dogs and tamales. Burger lovers from all over California and the world are drawn to the ramshackle hut for its retro charm and outstanding chili. The combination of the freshly prepared ingredients and ambience makes Tommy’s one of the best, most beloved, and fastest selling burger joints on the west coast, and maybe, in the world.

Five Guys - Hoboken

I have already posted info on Five Guys Burgers but I can't stop raving about burgers - and.... their fries! I visited the Five Guys in Hoboken, NJ. I ordered a cheese burger and it came with 2 patties plus I got to chose my toppings from grilled onions to fresh jalapenos to ketchup. The fries are dirty (with skins still on) and deep fried in peanut oil served in a large cup - the fry cup definitely runneth over. I was very happy.

2 large burgers, 1 fry and 1 medium drink - just shy of $20.00

Pals Cabin History

Pals Cabin first opened its shutters to the public on May 18, 1932. The little 10' by 12' "Cabin" was opened as a summertime venture by two "Pals" Martin L. (Marty) Horn and Bion Leroy (Roy) Sale. It was in the midst of the great depression, banks were closing and jobs were scarce. Marty Horn often said when commenting on Pals' beginning: "it was better than selling apples on a street corner."

Well it was better - and the business the two "pals" did that first summer gave them the courage to keep going. Quality and value were of paramount importance to the two "pals" and because of it, the little cabin began to grow. Addition after addition was completed until today, where Pals Cabin is nationally known as one of America's great restaurants. "The Cabin" has been owned and operated by the Horn Family continually since 1932. Today a third generation of the Horn Family conducts its business.

And so today, you are not just eating in another restaurant but rather you are dining in a place where a "Heritage of Hospitality" has been established over the years not only by the Horn Family but by the many loyal friends and patrons who dine here regularly.
